The full extent of the woodland has been identified as Ancient Replanted Woodland on Natural England’s Ancient Woodland Inventory (AWI). This indicates that forest soils are likely to have remained undisturbed by agriculture for millennia and therefore retain many important woodland characteristics. In particular, the woodland produces a fine display of bluebells and other woodland flowers in the spring and the autumn fungi is magnificant. Box Wood is one of the few places in England where Green Hellebore grows.
The Monarch butterfly – a rare visitor to this country – has often been spotted in Box Wood as have black squirrel, Muntjac deer, Roe deer, badgers and families of foxes.
